What is the difference between canapés and finger food?

Canapés are usually small one- or two-bite items, especially suitable for drinks receptions. Finger food is usually more substantial and may include mini sandwiches, skewers or savoury pastries. Bowl food offers small individual portions and can make a standing reception feel like a more substantial meal.

The number of portions needed depends on how long the event lasts, whether guests are expecting dinner or light snacks, the size of each item, and what other food or desserts will be available. A fixed number of pieces per person cannot suit every event.

Email info@pearllemongroup.com with the date, venue, expected guests, event timing, preferred style, dietary requirements and approximate budget. We can suggest a suitable mix and indicative quantities. Prices and staffing must be verified before booking.

Choosing a practical event format — October 2026

Canapés versus finger food

A canapé is typically a small, composed, one- or two-bite item intended for receptions or circulating service. Finger food is a broader term that includes sandwiches, pastries, small skewers, mini wraps, sliders and other foods that guests can usually eat without cutlery. A buffet may include finger foods or larger portions. The best choice depends on whether refreshments are a light reception, part of a meal, or intended to replace lunch or dinner.

How many pieces do I need per guest?

There is no single safe quantity for every event. Portion planning depends on event length, time of day, guest appetite and dietary needs, availability of other food, whether the food replaces a meal, guest demographics and service style. The team should explain the proposed number and size of pieces rather than give a price for “canapés” without usable quantity assumptions.

Does a canapé quote usually include servers?

Not automatically. Delivery-only platters, a self-service buffet and tray-passed reception canapés are different service models. Clarify whether you need staff, table linen, platters, plates, napkins, clearing, setup and transport, and whether VAT is included.

Can you handle vegetarian, vegan, halal, gluten-free or allergies?

Menu alternatives may be possible, but certifications, ingredient suitability and cross-contact controls must be verified with the actual supplier. A stated preference is not the same as a medically significant allergy. Do not promise “allergen-free” items without evidence.

What should I ask for?

Tell info@pearllemongroup.com your event date, venue, guest count, whether the food is a full meal or light reception, preferred cuisines, duration, dietary needs and serving arrangement, and budget if known. A useful indicative menu should show the portion assumptions and clearly separate food, delivery, staffing/equipment and taxes. A call is optional for an initial quote.
